3 Simple Tricks to Teach Your Dog

How would you like to teach your dog several neat dog tricks? Try these 3 simple tricks but before you begin here are a few things you should know:

1. Have some treats as rewards.
2. Work in an area quiet and away from interruptions.
3. Training sessions should be short. (No more than to 10 - 15 minutes long).

Additional information you should know:
If training sessions are too lengthy your dog may begin to get bored. If your dog does good offer plenty praise and a treat. Don't excite your dog too much or he could lose concentration.

Now for the tricks:

Trick #1 - persuade your dog to put his paw in your hand

Make your dog sit. (I suppose he knows how to this already.) At the same time you say the word "paw" put your dogs' paw in your hand and reward him with a treat. Repeat this several times. Say the word "paw" again but this time delay taking his paw in your hand. When your dog is learning you will notice your dog starting to lift the paw in the direction of your hand. If he doesn't respond start over again and slow your response. It could take more than one training session so keep trying if your dog doesn't do it right initially.

Trick #2 - Have your dog give you a high five
This trick is like the paw in your hand trick. Put a treat in your hand and hold it up a little higher than for the paw trick. (Your dog will believe you want to do the paw trick.) While he reaches for the treat, as taught previously, say: “high five” and give him the treat. This trick ought to be easier to become skilled at after learning the paw trick.

Trick #3 - Have your dog jump through a hoop
At first don't hold the hoop too high. You don't want your dog injured. Get your dog to sit on one side of a hoop. (The hoola hoop is good for this trick.) Try to get your dogs' attention by holding a treat in your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. He may want to go around or under the hoop. If this happens start again. If your dog wants the treat he will soon discover he has to go through the hoop. While he goes through the hoop say the word "hoop" or something similar so he'll realize this as a sign to go through it in the future. Reward him with his treat. After he learns he'll be jumping through the hoop on demand.

These simple tricks to teach your dog should make learning a little less difficult for both of you. Tricks are a fun activity you can do together. You'll take pleasure in the entertainment and he'll enjoy the tasty treats.
