As with any breed, obedience training is important but more so for Pit Bulls due to their potentially aggressive behavior. Training should begin while still a puppy and their behavior can still be developed. Typically Pit Bulls are very intelligent but they tend to lose focus so plan to be patient. It is strongly recommended that you follow a training program specifically designed for the Pit Bull to address the breeds’ specific needs.
The American Pit Bull Terrier is considered to be the only true breed of dog that can be called a Pit Bull although there are several types. The typical American Pit Bull Terrier is a very muscular, medium sized dog weighing in a range between 35-65 lbs. Some are bred for show, work or pets but some owners buy because of their protective nature.
The breed has a bad reputation due to attack incidents and negative media exposure about Pit Bulls trained for fighting but many owners will attest to the social nature of the breed. Pit Bulls do have strong personalities and demand a lot of attention but many owners and their families have had years of ownership with no problems.
